Objectives:
Increase awareness of the tools, services and activities expected to be provided by a successful national federation providing authentication / authorization services to its members. These training sessions will focus on the following topics sharing the knowledge and experiences of existing and new formed regional federations.

  • How we sign federation metadata
  • Which federation registry do you use, (Jagger) (…and how do you use it?)
  • Platforms for IdPs, How to you train people to install/admin it?
  • Platforms for SPs, How to you train people to install/admin it?
  • Marketing and Communications for your Federation

Session Chairs:
Terry Smith, Australian Access Federation

Agenda:

01. Types of Services - Terry Smith, Australian Access Federation
Services come in all shapes and sizes, are targeted at all sorts of audiences and will require different levels of support within your federation. In this session we will investigate the different types of services that are out there and the value they bring to your federation, your organisations and their users. This will highlight the lack of any individual killer applications, but that each service will add to growth of a strong and sustainable federation.

02. Protocol Offerings for Services - Terry Smith, Australian Access Federation
Over the past 10 years higher education identity federations supported SAML and only SAML. In more recent years the growth of OpenID Connect has resulted in many software developers moving their products to this newer and generally simpler protocol. Federation must move to provide options that can support more than just SAML to continue to be relevant to their subscribers. We will discuss initiatives that will allow your federation to provide multiple protocol options to service provides while minimizing the effort at organisations participating as identity providers.

03. Services from Beyond your Federation - eduGAIN - Terry Smith, Australian Access Federation
eduGAIN is a conglomeration of identity providers and service providers from 60+ national education identity federations. This session will help you to identify the quality service that may be of interest to your participating organisation or help encourage non-participating organizations to join.

04. Exposing your Services Beyond your Federation - eduGAIN - Terry Smith, Australian Access Federation
At some point a service within your federation may see the benefits of joining eduGAIN to allow collaborators from beyond your borders to participate and collaborate. This discussion will look at some of the issues they may face when attempting to connect to identity providers from other federations.
