Objectives :This workshop will encourage network engineers & NOC staff to work for integrating North American R&E networks, GEANT/Asi@Connect and APAN, especially for international advanced applications. This workshop will focus on advanced network research & engineering projects as well as the updates of APAN member/partner networks, and will help APAN to be one of the advanced research & education networks in the globe.

hereAgenda :1. Updated Status of NKN
The National Knowledge Network (NKN) is a state-of-the-art multi-gigabit pan-India network for providing a unified high speed network backbone for all knowledge related institutions in the country. It is the largest Research and Education Network (REN) of its kind in the world and is currently perceived as one of the leading REN globally. NKN is the primary backbone of the country which carries the traffic of e-Governance, Research and Internet on a single platform. In the international NREN landscape, NKN has peered with Research and Education Networks (RENs) such as Asi@connect in Asia Pacific, CERN and GEANT in Europe, SingAREN in Singapore, Internet2 in USA, LEARN in Sri Lanka, BdREN in Bangladesh, DrukREN in Bhutan and NORDUnet for Nordic countries and has established its own PoPs (Point of Presence) at Amsterdam, Singapore and Geneva. NKN also has established direct peering/ cache with Content Providers such as; Google, Akamai & Microsoft, to enhance the quality of services and improve user experience. Under SAARC initiative peering with Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Bangladesh has been completed, while the peering will soon be extended to Afghanistan, Maldives, and Nepal. Under BIMSTEC initiative, peering with Myanmar, Indonesia, Nepal (already covered in SAARC countries) and Thailand is in pipeline.
In the national landscape, NKN has been one of the important pillars of Digital India, as it has been the primary backbone for all e-Governance initiatives in the country. NKN currently connects more than 1706 institutes that includes almost all of the major Research and Education institutions within India and Government of India deployments like: NDCs (National Data Centres), SDCs (State Data Centre),State Wide Area Networks (SWANs), Ministries, Departments etc. "
3. SINET Updates -
Osamu AKASHISINET5 international links to US, Europe and Asia have upgraded to 100G links. It constructs a world-wide 100-Gbps ring backbone network for flexible traffic control. For providing more resilient network services, SINET has been collaborating with other NRENs for mutually backup in the Asia-Europe and North Atlantic areas in addition to the Pacific area. In this presentation, such recent updates about SINET activities are reported.
